yoga mat at homeOkay. So you’re set on finally practicing yoga at home.

But what are you supposed to do with the kids while you practice?

What exactly are you supposed to do during this practice?

And how can you move pass all those excuses you’ve been making for not practicing at home?

I’ve had all of these issue in the past, so I’m going to share with you 5 tips that helped me finally commit to practice regularly at home!

1. Know what you want

This seems simple but is really a rate limiting step for many of us. What do you want from your yoga practice?

Are you primarily wanting a good workout? Maybe a good stretch? Is this more of a spiritual endeavor for you? Or is it a combination of many things?

Your intention for doing yoga will help you decide on what postures to include in your practice.

2. Start simple with a video or online practice

I know it can be really intimidating to commit to a practice when you don’t have much experience with doing yoga. So you can always start just like I did, with a video!

There are many high quality yoga DVDs you can purchase. I offer a special mom’s only 30-minute online practice I did with Yoga International, so you can squeeze it into your day! Check it out here!

3. Research and write it down

So once you know what you want to get out of your home yoga practice, now you can start to put some sequences together.

Let’s say you are looking for a workout. Then, you may want to include flowing vinyasa style poses. If you don’t know many poses, start with the 9 movements of the Sun Salutation. These 9 postures done in a fluid movement can be practically your whole yoga practice.

If you want more of a spiritual experience, then you may exclude postures all together. You may research different mantras and meditation techniques instead.

Once you’ve gotten some ideas for postures you want to include. Write them down and put them in your practice space. This way you can always refer back to them.

Another option for creating a home practice is to have a trained yoga teacher do it for you!

You can do this by getting a private yoga class and asking your teacher to give you a written copy of the sequence she taught you, so that you can continue to practice on your own at home. If you live near me (Reading, PA) get in touch with me. I’d love to help you work towards your home practice goals. Check out my private yoga FAQ to learn more!

4. Set Yourself Up for Success

Here’s the logistical part that if ignored can break down the most well intended yoga plan.

To practice we need a space – right?

So decide on one. A room that has a door is nice, but if you can’t swing that, no worries. Choose a space that is clean and has a about 3-4 feet of clear wall space (with no pictures or furniture on it). Claim your territory by putting your mat and other yoga props in there.

Okay, you got a space, now you need the time. Think about everyone in your house and what their schedules are and how much time is possible for you to dedicate to your yoga practice. There’s no point in saying you’re going to practice at 5am, because that’s what you heard the “good yogis” do, if it doesn’t work for your real life.

For many moms, naptime, post-bedtime or right after the kids have left for school is a good and practical time.

Choose a couple of times that you think might work. One will be the main time and the other will be your back up.

5. Gather Your Homies

There is something magical that happens when we tell the world our intentions. All of a sudden people that you love start to ask you “how’s that going for you?” They are holding you accountable for what you said you were going to do.

So tell your, partner, your sister, brother, kids, mama. Come into the Yoga Mamas Facebook group and tell us your practice intentions, so we can help hold you accountable.

Put it out there to yourself and everyone around you that you are going to commit to a yoga practice that helps you take care of yourself.

The point is to not stress out about this. Doing just one of these tips today will get the ball rolling and start to build your momentum.
