“Asato ma sad gamaya. Tamaso ma jyotir gamaya. Mriyor ma amritam gamaya”
This means: Lead me from the unreal to the real. Lead me from darkness to light.Lead me from mortality to immortality.
This prayer is a demonstration of the truth that the core of yoga (as a spiritual practice) is about re-learning who and what you really are.
So often (more often than I care to admit) I try to stuff parts of me that seem “unlike” what I want to be in the moment in to a neat little box.
I want to be a responsible mother, so I stuff that wild and playful side of me into a box.
I want to be a spiritual yogini, so I stuff the margarita drinking, club dancing side of me into a box.
I want to do work that I can wear flip flops and stretchy pants to everyday, so I stuff my love for power suits and business meetings into a box.
You get the point – right?
But the Truth is….boxes are not made for people to be in. Boxes are made for storing THINGS. And you my dear are NOT a thing.
Knowing and fully appreciating all the parts of yourself is one of the goals of your yoga practice and it’s a good and significant one.
Because NO ONE will ever know and love you as deeply and completely as you can know and love yourself.
Yeah, I said it. Not your husband. Not your BFF. Not even your mama herself can know and love you as deeply and completely as you can.
That’s not to say that the love from others isn’t great and needed. BUT what I am saying is that even if no one else in the world ever cared enough to love you the way you wanted to be loved, YOU and your self-love would be more than sufficient.
In other words, YOU ARE MORE THAN ENOUGH!
Learning about your needs, your wants and your quirks on the mat AND fully accepting and appreciating those facts about yourself on the mat, is one of the ways you love yourself.
Further, its one of the ways we give ourselves permission to step out of our self-imposed boxes and step fully into the glorious being that we are.
Be blessed being YOU mama!
